We often tout our medals to be the greenest there are. And we still think that to be true. That doesn’t mean we’ll always hold that title. We hope we don’t. We want more people to see what’s possible and to embrace plastic-free and less waste. That’s when real change will happen – when more people stop creating stuff we don’t need without thinking of it’s end of life.
That doesn’t mean we will rest on our laurels. We always look for ways to improve. We recently had to swap our ribbons from hessian to cotton when we discovered trace amounts of plastic holding the hessian together. We were gutted the day we discovered that when we’d paid for ‘plastic-free’. Hessian is such a sustainable material, but coupled with creating more plastic we couldn’t justify it. So for now, we’re using 100% cotton which is biodegradeable. But cotton isn’t perfect. It uses a lot of water in it’s process, it uses a lot more land to grow and doesn’t grow as efficiently as hessian. So we continue to strive to find a better way.
And that’s what striving for sustainably is about – it won’t ever be perfect but it will be better than it was. Don’t stop trying. That’s our motto. Don’t stop aiming for better. Bit by bit. We’ll keep doing that.
