So launch day is upon us. In the next few days we’re taking the holding page down and opening up the website. I’ve done this before with a previous bright idea and the reality to launching a new site is that literally no one is waiting for it. There is a deafening silence apart from your lovely family and friends.
But for us, we’ve lived and breathed this site for the last few months. Believed in what we’re doing on the good days, running scared at the reality that no one else is that bothered on the bad days.
Launching was always going to be tough – we’ve backed this site to change the mindset of runners away from running for medals and T-shirts that eventually end up in landfill, and instead, start to run to earn trees to be planted to help change the world. And that’s a tall ask. We all like to see and feel our rewards, medals prove our worth to ourselves and others – that’s why we went on the search for a completely environmentally-friendly alternative medal. But now, now we’re all socially distancing ourselves and focusing on a new way of life for the short-term at least, does anyone really care right now about the planet to plant trees?
The good news that’s come from the enforced slow down is already showing in the benefit to the environment, pollution levels in the hotspots of Covid-19 are drastically dropping, fish are swimming in the canals of Venice and car usage is being cut by half. Maybe this is Mother Nature telling us to go to our rooms and think about our actions and maybe we’re all doing just that.
We’re all being forced to weigh up what’s important – we’re all looking for ways to stay sane, stay fit and healthy and to care that little bit more – the question for Earth Runs is can we convince people to use their time and effort, not just to earn shiny bling, but to actually start to change the world and plant trees? Can we use this time to make a difference to the forests?
